Giant Yellow Machine Appears in Shop Window, Turns Out to Be a Chair
Desmond R. has been sitting outside since Tuesday. He would like a word with whoever is inside it.

A very large yellow machine with arms, shoulders and a helmet has appeared in a shop window on the High Street, and has caused a small crowd to gather every morning since it arrived.
On closer inspection it is a chair. Next to it in the window stands a second, flatter version, which the shop says is the same chair “after it has calmed down.” Customers who sit in it report that it holds them firmly and rubs their back, and that this is the whole of what it does.
Desmond R., who has for some years been asking the council for a machine that thinks, has been sitting on the pavement outside since Tuesday with a notebook. “It folds itself in half,” he said. “Something in there is making decisions.”
The shop says nothing in there is making decisions, and that the chair has no opinions about anything, including Desmond. Al, who was passing, said that he agreed with the chair.
The writing on the shop window has been covered over at the shop’s request. The prices have not.

Day four. It folded in half again at 11:20. Nobody touched it. I have it written down.

The chair is right. Desmond is also right. I’m going to sit in it.

Our reading-room chairs have never once rubbed my back, and I would like it on record that I have never asked them to.
