Birthday Cake Explodes on Café Terrace; Student Goes Over the Railing, Then Gets Back Up
Witnesses describe confetti, a scream, and a fall that turned out to involve a cushion.

A birthday celebration on a second-floor café terrace in Skydale ended on Saturday when the cake exploded.
The cake had been brought by a Skydale High student for a boy’s birthday. Shortly after it was set down, it went off, by remote control, in a burst of cream and confetti. The young woman who had brought it is reported to have said one short word very loudly, then chased the young man responsible across the terrace. He went over the railing into the street below.
He then got up. Bystanders who rushed to help found him lying on a cushion with a packet of fake blood. The young woman’s hand was cut by a glass that broke during the incident. Her online account was deleted from her own phone while she was being treated. The young man denies everything, and was heard to observe: “Huh. You’re still getting likes.”
The café has not been named, at its own request.

We have repainted the terrace. Twice. The confetti is still coming out of the railings.
