A dirty sneaker left on a teacher’s desk at Skydale High School on Monday ended up in the flower beds below Classroom 214, a few feet from the school gardener.
The teacher, Ms. Beatrix Voss of World History, threw it out of the window herself. The gardener was unhurt. Within minutes, every boy in the class had hidden one of his own shoes, and the student whose sneaker it turned out to be was taken to the staff office for questioning.
Witnesses say the questioning went on for some time, during which Ms. Voss ate the student’s boiled egg and drank his Vegimilk. She is then understood to have gone to see the principal, Mr. Briggs, and eaten his fries and most of his burger.
“When I said help yourself, I was talking about the fries,” Mr. Briggs told staff afterwards.
The student who owned the sneaker has asked that it be returned. A classmate, speaking on condition of anonymity, said it did not matter because “those are knockoffs.”

Missed me by a yard. I’ve had worse from the pigeons.
