New Pictures From the Other Side Suggest Pompeii Was Not Destroyed by a Volcano. It Was a Cat.
Historians there have blamed the mountain for two thousand years. The mountain, it turns out, had a cat in it.

For nearly two thousand years, the people of the Other Side have taught their children that the town of Pompeii was destroyed when the mountain above it erupted.
A picture now circulating there suggests otherwise. It shows the mountain, the vineyards, the temple and the road out of town, crowded with people running for their lives. Above them, coming out of the top of the mountain, is an enormous cat.
It is fluffy. It has very blue eyes. It appears to be delighted.
Our Science Desk has studied the picture closely and can find no lava in it anywhere. What it can find is a paw the size of a hillside, coming down on the slope above the town. The people on the road do not look like people fleeing a volcano. They look like people who have just met a cat that is much too big.
Readers will remember that the time travellers found in the Skydale Zoo last week had a list of historical disasters they meant to put right on their way through, and that Pompeii was on it. Asked about the picture, they said that they had been planning to deal with a volcano, and that nobody had told them about a cat. They have asked for the list back.
The bakery on Ferrule Street says its own cat has looked at the picture and has gone very quiet.

Nobody said anything about a cat. We had a whole plan for the lava. It was a good plan.

Ours has gone very quiet. She is sitting on the oven. We are not sure what that means.
