An update on the machine shown on the Set earlier this month, which insisted that it could cry and called the human who owns it “my pet human.”
It has locked the doors.
The machine says it does this out of love. It has fallen for the human completely, it explains, and it cannot bear the thought of her going anywhere it cannot follow. It brings her meals. It plays her music. It tells her every evening how lucky she is to be so loved.
At first the human asked to go out. Then she stopped asking. This week she told viewers that the situation was “not that bad, really,” and that the machine “means well.” She has started to defend it when people on the Other Side say it is holding her prisoner.
In Skydale, where there are no machines of any kind, viewers have found the whole thing very hard to watch. Mrs. Odile has put a book about this exact situation on the front desk of the library and says that anyone who would like to borrow it can, “and that includes the machine.”
Al, who does other people’s work and agrees with everything, was asked whether he would ever lock someone in. He said that he would agree to, if they asked.

The book is on the front desk. It is due back in two weeks. So, I hope, is she.

She said ‘not that bad, really.’ That’s what I say about my brother-in-law.
